WandaVision:
Who the hell is Mephisto?
By: Ariba Bhuvad
If you've been paying attention to WandaVision and the multitude of theories that have come out of it, then you've surely heard all about Mephisto.
Given not everyone has read the comics or is well-versed in the Marvel lore, you may be wondering who the hell Mephisto is. Before I get into the meat of the comics, let me backtrack a little relative to the WandaVision theories.
All season long, we've been anticipating a "Big Bad" villain, and last week's episode hinted at Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn) taking on that mantle. Avid fans would beg to differ saying we have someone even bigger lurking in the shadows pulling all the strings that Agatha is pulling.
The biggest contender for WandaVision's "Big Bad" is none other than Mephisto. For all intents and purposes, Mephisto is Marvel's Devil who reigns over his own dimension--aka "Hell" or "Hades".

Much like the personification of Devil that we all can recognize, Mephisto is donned in all red--from his skin to his clothes. More so, he is extremely terrifying and loves to torture humans.
In the comics, he's butted heads with everyone from Silver Surfer to Doctor Doom to the Scarlet Witch. Yes, the Scarlet Witch!
His M.O. is pretty standard and offers superheroes what they want in exchange for taking away something very near and dear to them. He's basically a horrible villain, and if he happens to show up in WandaVision as many have been speculating, then we're in for quite the ride.
So how exactly would Mephisto play into the series? Well, in the comics, it's known that Wanda uses pieces of Mephisto's soul to create her twin boys, Tommy and Billy. Eventually, Mephisto absorbs them back into his soul, resulting in a catastrophic tragedy for Wanda. To help her deal with the trauma, Agatha Harkness wipes Wanda's memories, but it ultimately backfires when her memories come rushing back and in a fit of rage, Wanda winds up killing Agatha. This entire storyline basically paves the way for the House of M storyline in the comics.
Is Mephisto going to be in WandaVision?

Red Herring #1: "Demon spawn!"
In the episode, "All-New Halloween Spooktacular,” Wanda and Pietro take the boys out for trick-or-treating. It's a rather interesting night but there is one particular moment that really stands out. As the boys whiz off to get candy, Pietro shouts out "unleash hell, demon spawn!"
Sure, we can overlook this statement to be nothing but this is Marvel we are talking about, so we can't exactly ignore it either. After all, Tommy and Billy are literally demon spawn. I take this moment to mean Pietro either accidentally said what he did or didn't care and said it without giving it much thought. In either case, he could also share some connection with Mephisto.

Red Herring #2: Fly on the wall
In last week's episode, we saw a random fly/cicada/some bug on the curtain in Agnes' home. To the ordinary eye, it may mean nothing at all, however, this could also be a nod to Mephisto as well.
His first physical form was that of a fly. And as we learned in last year's Avengers #18, Mephisto was in the form of a fly when he was watching a Celestial die. Within the very same issue, it was also revealed that Mephisto can take on the form of other animals as well.

Given we've seen a handful of animals throughout WandaVision already, the possibility of Mephisto seems more and more likely. There's been a lobster, a dog, and a very creepy stork emanating red dust, for goodness sakes!
Of course, we have no idea if Mephisto is truly going to be in WandaVision or if Marvel is just enjoying playing with our minds, but it's been fun to theorize nonetheless.
Especially when it comes to the idea of who Mephisto could appear in the form of--is it someone we've already seen on the series or will it be someone completely different? Perhaps the surprise cameo that the cast has been ranting and raving about?
With just two episodes left, let's hope we get the answers to all our questions!
